Uther Pendragon

Uther Pendragon was the youngest son of Constantine of Armorica (Bretagne) and was crowned king after his brother, Aurelius Amrosius, was poisoned by a Saxon disguised as a priest. The family was originally from Britain and had gained the kingship for protecting the country from the northern Picts after the Romans had left Britain defenceless in 409.

After Uther Pendragon became king, the Saxon leader, Octa, whom his brother Aurelius Amrosius had defeated, believed he was no longer bound by the treaty he had made with the former king.

Octa took leadership of the remaining Saxons defeated by Uther Pendragon in Cambria, called for more soldiers from Germany, and with them marched to York, laying waste as they went, but was utterly defeated by Uther Pendragon and taken prisoner.

Following this, a great victory feast was organised at which all nobles of the kingdom and their wives were invited, at which Uther Pendragon incurred the wrath of Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, by courting his wife Igerna.

Gorlois and Uther Pendragon did battle at Tintagel, Gorlois was killed, Uther Pendragon married Igerna and they had two children, a daughter, Anne, and a son, Arthur, who became the most famous of the ancient kings of Britain.

In time, Uther Pendragon married his daughter, Anne, to Lot of Londonesia and when he fell ill entrusted the kingdom to them.

Meanwhile, the keepers of the prison where Octa and his Saxon henchman were interred had turned tail and fled to Germany with the prisoners where they amassed another army, landed in Scotland and marched south, laying waste as they went. The Britons did not follow orders from Lot, so Uther Pendragon, half-dead on a horse-litter, took charge and at Verulum defeated the Saxon invaders. Octa was killed and the Saxons retreated to Scotland.

However, some Saxons remained disguised at Verulum and learning that the ailing king took comfort in the spring water of the town, they poisoned it and in doing so not only killed him but hundreds of others who drank from it.

Upon Uther Pendragon's death, the Saxons in Germany under the command of Colgin invaded the island and determined to exterminate all Britons from it.

Were it not for the gallantry of Uther Pendragon's fifteen year old son, Arthur, the Britons would not have survived.
