1110-1129 Power Split: Emperor Temporal, Pope Spiritual
This twenty year period covers the reign of King Henry I of England at a time when the use of tea was
spreading throughout China (it would take many centuries more before tea became popular in the West).
Henry V ofGermany
was the Holy Roman Emperor and Paschal II was Pope of Rome. Paschal died in
1118 after being challenged by four antipopes due to the continuing struggle
between Rome
and the German emperors over ecclesiastical appointments and power.
Paschal's successor, Gelasius II died in 1119 after fleeing to France to avoid violence in Rome, and his successor, Callistus II, died in 1124 after excommunicating Henry V of Germany and finally coming to a agreement whereby Henry V would rule in the temporal sphere and the Pope would rule in the spiritual sphere.
The next pope, Honorius II, supported Lothaire III as successor to Henry V of Germany against Conrad, and approved the recently founded military-monastic Order of Knights Templar.
